Uncorrected Proof in blue paper covers. Cover features a white paper slip taped to front that states: “TENTATIVE PUBLICATION DATE: 9 OCTOBER 1989 | TENTATIVE PRICE: $18.95 | WITH A FULL-COLOR FOLDOUT ILLUSTRATION”.

Stapled to the inside front cover are two pages of promotional material for Julian Barnes’s earlier novels, Flaubert’s Parrot and Staring at the Sun.

This copy was used by a reviewer, so contains underlining and written annotations throughout, including the line “It’s as if | you knew | I’d come | to say | gb” to the back cover. Inscribed by the author to the title page [the inscription dedication has been digitally removed].

Published by Jonathan Cape to celebrate Independent Booksellers Week ( 30 June-7 July 2012). It was sold exclusively in independent bookshops. Proceeds from the sale of this pamphlet were donated to Freedom from Torture: The Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture.

Bound in cream paper wraps with red and black lettering. The author and title of the book are embossed, as pictured. The exact number of copies published is estimated by the author to be around 17,000.

The essay was also published in The Guardian.

This uncorrected proof is bound in the standard red paper cover typical of Jonathan Cape proofs during this time period. This proof is not to be confused with the Jonathan Cape proof bound in white with a picture of Noah’s ark on the front. The white proof was intended for wider distribution to reviewers, so is much more common than the red proof featured here.

The front cover states: “Provisional U.K. Publication Price: £10.95 | Provisional U.K. Publication Date: 22 Juen 1989”.
