Julian Barnes’s short story appears on pp. 132-149.

From a competition judged by Kingsley Amis, Patricia Highsmith and Christopher Lee. The Times sponsored the competition in conjunction with Jonathan Cape.

This constitutes Julian Barnes’s first book publication, as it was published five years before his first novel Metroland (Jonathan Cape, 1980). The book was published in hardback with dark green dust jacket. The top of the text block is stained yellow.

This edition was followed by a paperback edition (Corgi Books, 1977) and a German translation (Bastei Lübbe, 1979), also in paperback.

Below is pictured Julian Barnes’s advance copy sent to the author from his publisher Jonathan Cape. The copy bears Barnes’s personal ownership signature dated “MCMLXXV” [1975].

Julian Barnes’s essay on visiting Sibelius’s home was originally published in More Intelligent Life (January/February 2012). The essay now resides on the 1843 Magazine website, which is published by The Economist. The book featured contains Barnes’s essay along with essays by Roddy Doyle, Margaret Drabble, Don Paterson, Ali Smith, Ann Patchett, Alan Hollinghurst, Andrew Motion, William Boyd, and numerous others.

Published in paperback in 2017.

The Royal National Institute of Blind People published Julian Barnes’s short story “One of a Kind” along with three other short stories. Spiral bound, the cover is labelled “Short Stories 158”. No printed publication date.

Barnes’s short story “One of a Kind” was originally published in the London Review of Books, Vol. 4, No. 3, 18 February 1982, pp. 23-24.

This edition inscribed “One of Ryan’s more obscure discoveries – all good wishes – Julian Barnes”.

Notes on this publication: In 2016, the National Theatre presented David Hare’s The Red Barn, a play based on the novel, La Main, by Georges Simenon. The programme for the play includes an essay by Julian Barnes titled “Admirable Positives and Enviable Negatives”. The essay is adapted from his essay “Georges Simenon Returns”, first published in The Times Literary Supplement (7 May 2014).

In 1996, the Grosvenor House in London hosted the Antiquarian Booksellers Association’s Thirty-Seventh Antiquarian Book Fair, and Julian Barnes wrote the introduction to the fair catalog (pp. 5-7). His essay discusses book collecting and the idealistic notion of “completeness”.

Of the limited number of catalogs published for this occasion, one hundred were signed by Barnes at the end of his introduction. Each signed copy was numbered, as pictured.
