Jonathan Cape eventually published two separate bound proofs, the first in red and the second in white with illustrated cover. Both proofs state publication was scheduled for 22 June 1989. This proof has a date of “6th February 1989” printed to the cover sheet, which undoubtedly refers to the date the proof was printed by Rowland Phototypesetting.

Uncorrected proof secured with plastic comb binding. Printed on 28 November 2007. In discussing this specimen with Julian Barnes, he suggested this form of proof would have been created in extremely limited quantities prior to the more traditional uncorrected proof. This may, in fact, be the only extant copy bound in this manner.

In cooperation with Jonathan Cape, Foyles released a limited edition of Julian Barnes’s novel The Only Story with “an exclusive cream dust jacket and ribboned marker, and signed by Julian Barnes”. The edition was limited to 1,500 copies sold through Foyles book shops and website.

Literary Life by Posy Simmonds (Jonathan Cape, 2003)
