The unbound proof text matches the bound uncorrected proofs. The proof text is altered in places in the first hardback edition by Jonathan Cape (1984).

This unbound, loose sheet uncorrected galley proof is from Julian Barnes’s personal collection. Printed by “Rowland Phototypesetting”, these loose proofs are printed on one side of each sheet, two pages per page, landscape format.
Jonathan Cape eventually published two separate bound proofs, the first in red and the second in white with illustrated cover. Both proofs state publication was scheduled for 22 June 1989. This proof has a date of “6th February 1989” printed to the cover sheet, which undoubtedly refers to the date the proof was printed by Rowland Phototypesetting.

Uncorrected proof secured with plastic comb binding. Printed on 28 November 2007. In discussing this specimen with Julian Barnes, he suggested this form of proof would have been created in extremely limited quantities prior to the more traditional uncorrected proof. This may, in fact, be the only extant copy bound in this manner.

Simmonds draws Julian Barnes in several of the launch party scenes. Barnes has praised Simmonds’s works several times in various publications. In 2018, he referenced this work was on his bedside table (interview with Rachel Cooke, The Guardian).
